Design Project One

20181026_184630.jpg

Objective

Patient 3: Salwa Al-Nasseri

Age: 54

Ostomy Type: Colostomy

Appliance: One piece, drainable mini pouch with convex flextend barrier, lock and roll closure, filter

Additional Considerations:frequent gas; high output, loose stool

Salwa has a colostomy and uses a one-piece, drainable mini-pouch system. She has found her rate of digestion to be such that, there is little output before she goes to bed. Consequently, she experiences significant bowel activity overnight, which causes her pouch to either fill up quickly with output, or balloon from frequent gas. Fortunately for Salwa, she will typically wake so that she can use the bathroom to empty the bag, thus preventing leaks. However, Salwa finds that, as a result of her frequent bowel activity, she is unable to sleep for more than 1-2 hours at a time.

Salwa’s occupation is such that she works afternoons and is unable to eat until mid-to-late evening at the earliest, which contributes to her overnight bowel activity. She is also more comfortable using the drainable mini-pouch, as she finds them to offer more discreteness. Although their smaller size is less detectable and more comfortable to wear, it also makes for less capacity, which contributes to her frequently waking up in the night to empty the pouch.

The project requires that your team:

Translate the assigned problem into a set of objectives and constraints

  • Your team is required to gather and document information pertaining to the assigned problem

  • Your team is required to list attributes and behaviors that a design solution should have or exhibit

  • Your team is required to list restrictions on the design solutions behaviors or attributes

Design a solution for management of medical device

  • Your team is required to generate several concept solutions for your design problem

  • Your team is required to develop detailed sketches and schematics that clearly describe both form and function of one proposed concept

  • Your team is required to conceptualize a prototype of your design

  • Your team is required to clearly describe how your design will interact with the existing medical device, and what modifications to the existing medical device are necessary for implementation

Justify consideration of your design solution for further development

  • Your team is required to justify how the form and function of your design addresses your assigned design challenge

  • Your team is required to justify the proposed materials, means of fabrication, and (if applicable), assembly

  • Your team is required to justify any device/user interactions or device modification
